Growing up in an old Victorian in Spencer, NC led me to have an affinity for historic homes. There’s something about the unique architecture and the connection to history that makes my heart swell.

This  October,  the little town of Spencer will be overrun with historic home enthusiasts (like myself) who will be taking a glimpse into some of Spencer’s finest historic homes. This year marks the 43rd annual OctoberTour and I couldn’t be any prouder that my little hometown is being featured in one of the oldest annual historic home tours in the South.

“Why Spencer” you might ask? Well, Spencer has a long history of railroading and the theme of this year’s OctoberTour is “Sharing Our Railroad History Between Salisbury and Spencer.”

Samuel Spencer, the town’s namesake and first president of the Southern Railway, is credited with establishment of the railroad's mechanical shops in the town beginning in the 1890s.

The excellent location made Spencer the perfect choice for Southern Railway. The site was approximately the midpoint of the railroad's mainline between Atlanta, GA and Washington, DC. As the railroad shops were being built the Southern Railway developed a town, also named Spencer, alongside the shops for worker housing.

The community grew quickly and by 1901 had 625 residents thanks to the innovative thinking of Southern Railway. Instead of creating a traditional "company" town in which the workers rented houses Southern sold the lots to workers or businesses for $100 each.

This October, tour attendees will enjoy peeking inside some of these historic homes which vary in size, complexity and architectural style. And touring the grounds of the NC Transportation Museum is always a must. Come hear the stories about turn of the century rail roaders whose lives and labors shaped the character and the historic fabric of this community.
